Most composers, even the most acclaimed ones such as Mozart, have prominent detractors, such as Glenn Gould. In fact every artist, even one as esteemed as Shakespeare, has their critics, but as far as I can tell there is not a single musician who thinks Bach is a bad composer. There are certainly many who don’t like his music or don’t consider him a favourite, but I’ve never read anyone who thinks he is not a good composer.

It is strange that an artist’s work should be so completely without criticism. But maybe the impression that I have of his universal acclaim is ignorant. I am very interested to hear the opinion of anyone who is critical of him, or even thinks he is overrated.

edit: for clarification I believe as much as anyone else that Bach is a masterful composer, however I’m interested in views that would say otherwise, and curious as to why he has no notable critics.
