I’d heard about the Debussy ‘flute viola harp’ sonata, which I thought was just a lark of instrumentation. But then I ran into this Prokofiev (arrangement?) of Masks for the same group ‘flute viola harp’, and it got me thinking: is this a regular thing? Wiki suggests there’s actually tons of pieces in this genre, and I’m just curious for more information.

Where does this ensemble come from? Is this a standard trio, just like ‘string quartet’? Did Debussy really have that much of an influence with the single work? How common is it? What other reasons are there for this particular selection of instruments, for example, why not flute, viola, piano?
